It has been a little while since I have posted anything here, my apologies to anyone nice enough to be watching me.

For my introductory level metalsmithing class, our first assignment was to create a simple band ring. There was no theme required for this project except that the piece has to be a functioning ring (one that would easily fit on a hand and move freely). The second project for that class was to create a non functioning ring based on the first, functioning ring. (The last project was to create a 'ritual object', which will come into play later)

The six winged copper ring was my functioning ring named "Angel Ring' when presented alone. The name is based of old Catholic angel mythology which believes that there is a hierarchy to angels in heaven. The lowest tier is simply an angel.

It took forever for me, a fresh faced metalsmith at the time, to cut out each of those wings so that they matched. I chose an angel theme for this ring with the smaller ring having one set of wings. (Each made of 3 smaller feathers/wings).

The wings are at just the right angle so that they will not hit the back of the hand when the wearer moves his or her finger. Granted, it is not something that I could imagine someone wearing around on a daily basis. Despite it's look it is quite comfortable.

The larger and darker ring is the non-functioning ring (a ring that is totally unwearable but is still, technically, a ring). This ring is named 'Archangel Ring'. It is based on the same angel wing motif, but is sporting two pairs of wings instead of the smaller ring's single set. The extra pair of wings is also meant to reflect the idea that an archangel, an angel one rank above angels, has an extra set of wings.

Each of my projects from this semester were designed to function as a stand alone piece as well as combining with each following project. I designed the 'Angel Ring' to fit snugly over the the 'Archangel Ring' making a combined non functional ring.

This combined ring, the one seen above, is the 'Seraph Ring' named for six winged Seraph/Seraphim. A Seraphim is from a totally different level as an angel/archangel and is a constant attendant of GOD.

I really like the difference in colour, also I think that it's a great idea that you named "Seraph Ring" after the Seraphim!

all i have to say is your explanation makes me giddy! no one ever explains their work like that - probably because it's never so profound - but it's so nice to know with the work! I love this piece:D it's stunning!! part of it looks a little like a gun barrel and a bug and a beautiful winged thing - all rolled up - it's just tasty for my eyes:D thanks for posting this:D
